Having experienced chronic pelvic pain myself I know how soul destroying ongoing pain can be and how much it can interrupt your life. I explored countless healing avenues with no real results which left me feeling drained and broken.

Through relentless research and experimentation I discovered Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) - a science backed method focusing on psychological and nervous system tools. This approach, which I continue to use with clients today, is grounded in modern pain science that shows that pain is not necessarily a result of tissue damage in the body but an overly sensitive threat response in the brain.

  • Your treatment plan will vary depending on your pain presentation, schedule, personality traits and other factors but may consist of:

    1. Educational hand outs to assist you in between consultations.

    2. Information about pain science education.

    3. Personalised pain/stress reduction tools and exercises and guidance around how often to practice them.

    4. Nervous system regulation exercises.

    5. Recommended books, articles, videos and podcasts.

    6. Recordings tailored to you of relevant pain reprocessing tools, meditations or somatic tracking.

  • I usually recommend at least 2 sessions within the first 6 weeks followed by monthly appointments. Once you have a better relationship with pain and notice improvements these appointments can be spaced out further.

  • Yes absolutely!

    PRT is being studied and has been shown to be highly effective in recovering from chronic pain. A study published in 2022 in the JAMA Psychiatry, a peer-reviewed medical journal published by the American Medical Association, demonstrated the clinical efficacy of Pain Reprocessing Therapy.

    Results of the study were as follows:

    66% of participants in the PRT group were pain-free or nearly pain-free at post-treatment (vs. 20% in the placebo group, 10% in the usual standard of care group). These gains were largely maintained at a 1-year follow-up.

    MRI results showed noticeable changes in the brain's response to pain in the PRT group relative to the other groups

  • PRT has five main stages that we work through together :

    1. Education- Learning about the brain origins and reversibility of pain

    2. Evidence -Gathering and reinforcing personalised evidence for the brain origins and reversibility of pain

    3. Establishing safety -Attending to and appraising pain sensations through a lens of safety through techniques such as somatic tracking

    4. Emotional threats -Addressing other emotional threats such as people pleasing, perfectionism, childhood trauma

    5. Reinforcing positive -Gravitating towards noticing positive feelings and sensations to shift the brains focus
